Wine Rambler's Wife - Introduction

Ramblings
From the Wine Rambler’s Wife

Introduction:
I’m Joanne, and I’m Jim Nash’s wife, among other things. Here’s some background. We’ve been married since 1971, and I spent many years as a teacher, mostly of 8th grade English. I was very happy teaching, and now I’m happily retired.

Jim and I both love dogs. We have owned, bred, and shown Dalmatians since shortly after we were married, and we’ve done the same with Cavalier King Charles Spaniels since 1986. Rambler is our kennel name, and our dogs are a big part of our lives. The dogs’ website is www.nashrambler.com.

Jim’s serious interest in wine was triggered by a chance to work in the David Bruce Winery’s tasting room in the Santa Cruz Mountains (Northern California) – he found that he really enjoyed learning about wines, and all aspects of the subject fascinate him.

On the other hand, my drink of choice is Diet Dr. Pepper, though I must admit that I enjoy trying wines that Jim thinks I’d find interesting. He doesn’t – luckily for me – bother to share anything but good wine, and I now enjoy most of what he offers me.

Why I’m Writing These Ramblings….
Jim is serious about wine (and he has fun with it). He is a certified sommelier with lots of wine knowledge, and he’s constantly learning more. This website is to share some of his ideas for wine lovers, to describe particular wines he’s enjoyed, and to look at wine in a serious study of an enjoyable subject.

My part of this is to represent the interests of spouses, family members, and friends of true wine aficionados, with a lighter look at the wine world.

So here’s the Wine Fact for the Day #1:  Did you know that Chardonnay and Chablis are made from the same grape? It’s the Chardonnay varietal, which originated in France and is now a popularly grown grape in many areas of the world, including California, where we live.

And Wine Fact for the Day #2   if you see a bottle of White Burgundy, it is from the Chardonnay grape, and like Chablis, the wine is the same as Chardonnay. It can’t be called White Burgundy though unless it comes from the Burgundy region in France…and Chablis should really come from the Chablis area of France.

Confused? Me too, but here’s Wine Fact #3. Wines might be labeled by the varietal – the kind of grape the wine is made from – or they might be named to indicate the region in which the grapes are grown.

This is more than enough for a first Ramblings from the Wine Rambler’s Wife, so farewell for now!
